Some tips and Techniques for the IELTS G T Reading Module
- Time management is the key to achieve success. Don’t spend too much time on a single question as that will lose you time for answering questions that could be easier for you. You can come back to the question at the end of the test, if you have time.
- Read the title and any headings first. Make predictions about the topic, like:
What is the passage about?
What is the main idea?
Who are the characters?
When and where things are taking place?
Why is it important?
- The third section is longer and more complex than the first two, so remember to save time for it.
- You should be able to answer the questions in all the section in less than 20 minutes. Use your time well and don’t read every word slowly and carefully.
- Read the questions and instructions carefully to avoid mistakes. Don’t mix the Yes/No answers with True/False or vice versa.
- If the question asks to answer in no more than two words, use no more than two words.
- Write correct spellings, otherwise your answer will be marked as wrong.
- Be sure to write your answers on the answer sheet before the 60 minutes are over as you will not get extra time to transfer your answers.
Reading Techniques- Skimming, Scanning and Reading for Detail
- Skimming
Skimming means reading fast to get the ‘gist’ or general idea of the text. You can run your eyes over the text getting the general meaning, not stopping at words that you don’t understand as this will slow down your reading. Speed is the most important factor in skimming. You need to skim part or all of a text to do certain tasks, such as matching headings.
- Scanning
This is another important technique for the IELTS Reading Tests. You don’t have to read every line back and forth as you would read a novel. You need to search for some specific information; a word or a name, using this technique. You read the question and then you search for the key words, phrases or ideas associated with the question. With some tasks, you need to scan part or all of the text. This means you should quickly locate specific information or look to see whether the information is mentioned or not.
- Reading for Detail
With some tasks, you are required to read part of the text carefully to understand the meaning in detail.
